Starting a Non Profit Checklist

I’m often asked about the steps involved in starting a non profit. While there are some standard steps you can take, there are also variations based on the state in which you are planning on forming. You see, while 501(c)(3) – what people traditionally think of as non profit status – is an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) classification for tax exempt status (on the basis of there not being a profit motive and the purposes of the organization being in the public interest). The status Continue reading →

Want to be a better writer? 6 Questions to Ask

Writing well, (to be a better writer) both for comprehension and for style and beauty is an art form that requires continuous improvement: improvement in form, style, learning the rules so you know when to break them, learning when to rely on the classical forms of rhetoric and when to seek to cut through the brush and find new and uniquely you ways of expressing yourself. Metaphors, synonyms, antonyms, similes. Beauty, ugly, honorific, soporific, deriding, motivating, cutting, seeking to find solace in the past or Continue reading →

Why your non profit should be writing press releases

Non Profit Press Releases are exactly like any other kind of press release! Whether you call them press releases, news releases, or media releases, and whether you consider them an “old media” form of communication, here is why your non profit should still be writing press releases. Simply put, instead of thinking about release as a way of gaining media coverage, think of it as an opportunity to gain media coverage and a valuable piece of marketing material. A press release is your message in Continue reading →

A little bit less of a superhero

For the first two and a bit decades of my life I ran roughshod over myself. Tired or not, sick or not. If i had things to do, they got done. If this involved sport or some other punishing physical endeavour then all the better. It was not unusual for me to play a game of cricket, travel to an away swimming carnival, run 5 to 10k in training for cross-country, and play or umpire a couple of games of netball in the same weekend. Continue reading →

Cultivate

Cultivate. Grow, encourage, nurture, prune, trellis, teach, learn, train, manage, raise, propagate, prepare, tend, work, till, ripen, acquire, develop, form. There’s an agrarian undertone to be sure. But it is the engendering of a life that will benefit from tender, loving, self care, along with energies directed toward my fledgling company, and my most important relationships in my life. Cultivate is a transitive verb. It denotes action that is happening. to prepare or prepare and use for the raising of crops; :  to foster the Continue reading →

You are not special

A few years ago I spent six months in between positions in higher education working in retail hospitality: a cafe in a busy mall. I wrote this reflection in the midst of that experience. Each Christmas I am reminded by the lessons buried deep within muscle memory from that time. _____________________________________________________________________________ Working with ‘the public’ for the last four or five months, one pervasive attitude has struck me as being detrimental to our communities growing and thriving. It’s something that I don’t see the church Continue reading →
